Tour de France stage 14 israel start up nation
Guy Niv’s surprising pace did not end as he expected: “I am a little angry at myself.”
We had prepared a great plan for today’s 194km stage and had worked it out long before we arrived at the great city of Lyon – the plan was brilliant.
The execution? Not even close.
We expected Bora-Hansgrohe to press hard for Peter Sagan, and the idea was to stick to their wheels in the hope that Hugo Hofstetter, who is having a great Tour de France – would be able to keep up with the pace and get a chance to sprint.
But it was clear from the beginning of the stage that Hugo just didn’t have the legs to keep up with Bora’s impressive onslaught. ״I had a bad day,” admitted the Frenchman. “I felt a lot of pain in my back, and frankly, the pace was just too high for me at times.”

And he wasn’t alone. Half the peloton and all our riders except Dan Martin were in the same boat. They all stuck to the green jersey group and protected their energy level for tomorrow’s hard climbing stage.
One rider who performed at a remarkable level was our Israeli Guy Niv, who surprisingly kept pace with the best until suddenly losing contact in a split on a descent. “I am a bit angry at myself,” he said. “I felt great, but a small split cost me dearly. I had a chance to finish in Lyon with the yellow jersey group today, but I just missed the opportunity.”
