Going into the last killer climb called Meribel, Guy Niv felt suddenly that all his power was gone.
“It was weird,” said the Israeli, who, surprisingly, is handling his first Tour De France with relative ease – even in the last two weeks. “I felt fine all day and was even covering some moves. But then, suddenly, I had nothing left.”
The problem was the steep grades in the last 13km. “You have to clear your mind now,” our Spanish sports director told him. “Stop thinking and concentrate on the next kilometer. And then the next. Don’t doubt yourself.”
Some distance back, Andre Greipel was facing the same situation, and he too just had to keep it up.
Will power just HAD to carry them.

“I knew that I was facing my moment of truth. It was the same situation I found myself in during the last climbing stage at the Giro last year. I had to overcome then, and I had to do it again today,” said Niv, who kept grinding and grinding.
Like almost every other day on the Tour, we were in the middle of the action. Dan Martin was able to get into the breakaway of the day with super powerful partners. But in the descent of the Madeleine, he lost contact with some of them. He took it in stride and said he was already thinking about his next chance. “I am happy to go in the front again,” he said. “Once I realized the stage victory was out of reach, I started to think about tomorrow.”

And he is not the only one. Niv and his teammates reached the top, exhausted, and already the focus was on preparing for the next stage – which everybody agrees may be even tougher, with a series of climbs from the outset. “Today is over. Tomorrow will be a new day, a new big challenge, and after that, the way to Paris is open,” said the Israeli who vows to be ready.
