Is it a good sign that we are not terribly excited about finishing 7th in stage 7 of the Tour de France?
Maybe we have been spoiled by our French sprinter who has already finished in the top-ten three times, but this seems to be the case.
Although maybe today, Hugo Hofstetter deserves the accolades more than ever before, especially if we consider the dramatic chain of events that took place during the 168km stage. Our Frenchman was tested in a big way.
It started with Bora-Hansgrohe going full gas and breaking the peloton into three big chunks. Hugo (along with Politt, Neilands, and Martin) survived the onslaught. Then came the crash that looked like all hopes for Hugo’s sprint were destroyed.
Hugo: “It was a stupid crash. A rider pressed his breaks very hard in front of me and I reacted by breaking as well. We were going so fast that I could not avoid the fall. Unlucky me.”
But he remounted and started a long and hard chase by himself, ignoring the gash in his left leg.
Next came the crosswinds that split up the team and left Hofstetter alone in the final stretch. He had to sprint with no assistance – an unenviable position. “I was sitting on Peter Sagan’s wheel, but I was squeezed into the barrier,” added Hugo, who settled for 7th with some regrets.
“I believe if he’d had some of his teammates around, he could have finished 3rd,” said our French sports director, Lionel Marie.
And Hugo? He was just relieved that his visit to the X-ray clinic was uneventful, and he can continue his fine journey in the Tour de France.

אין ספק שהוגו הופסטטר הוא עד כה האיש שלנו בטור דה פראנס עם המקום השביעי שהשיג היום, ודירוגו שלוש פעמים בעשירייה הראשונה (מקום רביעי, עשירי ושביעי) בחמשת הימים האחרונים.

לא רק שהיה חזק דיו לשרוד את המתקפה הרצחנית של חבורת סאגן של בורה, אלא המשיך במפגן גם אחרי שהתרסק כ 60 ק”מ לסיום וחזר בחריקת שיניים לדבוקה הקדמית. וכאשר אסטנה ניצלו רוחות צד כדי לפצל את הדבוקה הקדמית, הוא היה היחיד מהקבוצה שהיה עירני ושרד. העובדה שנילס פוליט וקריסטס ניילנדס לא היו ערוכים לפיצול, עלתה לנו כנראה בתוצאה טובה יותר. ״אנחנו חייבים לשמור על ריכוז במצבים כאלה״ אמר המנג׳ר הצרפתי ליאונל מארי בסיום הקטע.
ובאשר לגיא ניב: ניב עבר היום מבחן לא פשוט בהצלחה יחסית. הוא התגלה כבעל הספק ״מנוע״ שאיפשר לו לשרוד את מתקפת בורה בדבוקה השניה, ולעמוד בקצב וברוחות.
גיא ניב: ״זה היה יום מטורף. פתיחה מפלצתית בחסות הרוח שריסקה את הפלטון לחתיכות, ולא נרגעה עד לסיום… באופן אישי ידעתי שאלה ימי מוקש עבורי, ואני שמח שעמדתי ביום כזה, ובלי דרמות מיוחדות. מבחינה מנטלית הייתי די רגוע כי ידעתי שאני בדבוקה השניה ויש עוד דבוקה שלמה מאחוריי, ככה שידעתי שאני יכול להיות רגוע בסך הכל. לעבוד קשה, אבל
לנשום עמוק ולדעת שהכל בסדר.״
