A fascinating experiment took place last weekend in Plovdiv: we took Israel Start-Up Nation’s best young power sprinter, Itamar Einhorn, and threw him into the lion’s den – the European track championship.
Then we asked him to compete against the best, with almost zero experience.
The goal: give him a chance to develop his power and the opportunity to sprint multiple times – more than in a full season of road races – in just a few days.

So, how did it go? If you ask Steve McEwen, the Israeli cycling track performance director who handled this unique project, there is no doubt: “Itamar raced in the Scratch race, a race of 60 laps, at an average speed of 56 km/h, and finished a credible 13th place.
“The next day Itamar started in the Omnium race and, considering this was his second race ever, he performed magnificently. With every race averaging between 54-57 km/h, these races are so demanding. Itamar, despite crashing in the points race, finished 11th.
“I’m proud of this boy. He listens, learns, and develops.”

Although ISN’s interest in this project is to further develop the Israeli’s skills as a sprinter, McEwen looks at Itamar (and Tomer Tene, his national track teammate) as a great track prospect. With the Sylvan Adams Velodrome in Tel Aviv alive and kicking, there is a lot to look for.

McEwen: “We are looking forward to next year, which is the start of an Olympic cycle towards Paris in 2024. Hopefully Itamar can succeed on that journey! One thing is certain: he has the potential.”

The last word goes to Itamar who, as usual, speaks in understatements: “I came to a new discipline with almost no experience. But, with Steve’s help, I am happy that I got a chance to be part of the game and get better. With the very little time I’ve race on the track, I can be satisfied.”
